Berwick Mini Film Fest 2008

Opening Night Friday 28th Nov 7.30pm

The Berwick Film and Media Arts Festival is delighted to present a gala screening of the silent classic German expressionist film, The Cabinet of Dr Caligari. Reflecting the theme of the ‘inner state’, this hugely influentialcreative masterpiece virtually established the genre of the horror movie and went on to inspire the cinematic world of Dracula, Frankenstein and Hollywood film noir. Noted for its bizarre and distorted fantastical sets, it tells the story of the sinister Calagari and his zombie like servant Cesare and their involvement in a series of murders in the mountain village of Holstenwall. In
one of the earliest examples of a flashback (within a flashback) the film concludes with a revealing, ‘stateshifting’ twist.
An original soundtrack will be performed live by the internationally acclaimed duo ‘In the Nursery’, twin brothers Klive and Nigel Humberstone. The score brings a powerful mixture of dark, mesmeric and modernistic tones to this cult classic – a must see.

21:30 I Served the King of England (Obsluhoval jsem anglického krále)

Jirí Menzel / CZ, SK / 2006 / 120min Cert. 15 Cast: Ivan Barnev, Old?ich Kaiser, Julia Jentsch
If you like your humour dark, your slapstick tightly choreographed and your Czech beers expertly poured, you’re in for a treat. Jan Díte sells frankfurters on the station platform while wishing he was a millionaire hotelier. What he lacks in height he makes up for in wide-eyed opportunism and physical agility, adroitly grabbing every rung on his way up the hotel-trade ladder in 1930s Prague. He seems not so much shrewd as totally devoid of political or moral awareness, his fortunes thriving while his country struggles under Nazi occupation. Jan fails to sense that the hand of history is about to slap him right across the face.

Oli Brown Gig.....

A big thank you to everyone who made it to see Oli Brown on Friday! All I can say is what a night! There had been a lot of talk about Oli and expectations for the gig were high. Oli and the band didn’t disappoint, in fact they rocked the barrels to its foundations. If you haven’t seen or heard of Oli then this is a super star in the making.

A musical genius at only 19 years of age he played some of the most technical and competent guitar playing we have ever seen in the Barrels!

Backed up by his band Simon Dring on drums & Fred Hollis on his six stringed bass. Reminiscent of cream in the early days there seamless playing built and dropped in crescendos as they played through a set of solid rip roaring blues.

Olly is on tour supporting Walter and we couldn’t recommend going to see him enough!!! Hopefully the guys will return in 2009. Watch this space.
